Apple has filed a lawsuit in Northern California against Dr. Chen Shi, a former Sensor System Architect on the Apple Watch team, as well as Oppo and the California-based InnoPeak Technology, alleging a coordinated conspiracy to misappropriate Apple’s confidential technology.
According to Apple, Dr. Shi attended multiple internal one-on-one meetings to gather sensitive information, downloaded 63 confidential documents from a protected Box folder onto a USB drive shortly before his exit, and even searched phrases such as “how to wipe out MacBook” and “Can somebody see if I’ve opened a file on a shared drive?”, suggesting awareness of wrongdoing and attempts to conceal his tracks.
Before resigning, Dr. Shi allegedly messaged Oppo stating he was working to “collect as much information as possible”, referring specifically to Apple’s health-sensing technologies.
Apple’s Claims
Apple alleges that Dr. Shi held a privileged position with access to Apple’s cutting-edge health sensor technology, including ECG sensor design and product roadmap documents, and took steps to exploit that access for his new employer.
Based on communications from Dr. Shi’s Apple-issued devices, Apple contends that Oppo was not only aware of but also encouraged and approved his efforts to gather proprietary information.
In its suit, Apple is seeking:
- Injunctions to prevent the use or disclosure of its trade secrets.
- Restitution, damages, punitive damages, and attorneys’ fees.
Oppo’s Response
Oppo has publicly denied involvement in any wrongdoing, stating that there is “no evidence establishing any connection” between the allegations and actions during Dr. Shi’s employment with them. The company emphasised its respect for intellectual property rights and pledged to cooperate fully with legal proceedings.
Industry Impact
- Corporate Security & IP Protection: The lawsuit highlights the critical importance of safeguarding proprietary information, particularly in industries driven by sensor and health technology innovation.
- Global Tech Competition: This case exemplifies ongoing tensions in the global tech industry, especially in U.S.–China relations, where accusations of talent poaching and IP theft frequently emerge in high-stakes legal battles.
- Legal Precedent: Apple’s aggressive pursuit of injunctions and punitive damages signals a strong stance against trade-secret violations, with broader implications for employment mobility and corporate ethics.
- Enforceability Hurdles: Given Dr. Shi’s move to China and Oppo’s jurisdiction, enforcing U.S. court orders across borders introduces complex international legal challenges.
