MBA-holder Busayo Ladapo just earned top recognition at Canada’s most influential Black entrepreneurship event. She walked away with the Smart Start “Top Venture Award” and $5,000 in funding at the Black Founders Network’s 4th Anniversary Demo Day in Toronto.
The victory puts Ladapo among an elite group of Black entrepreneurs breaking barriers in Canada’s startup ecosystem.
Smart Start Program Creates Path for Black Entrepreneurs
The Black Founders Network operates as part of the University of Toronto’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. The Smart Start program specifically targets early-stage Black-led ventures with funding and mentorship.
Ladapo competed against 11 other founders from the Smart Start cohort. Each entrepreneur pitched their venture to judges at the demo day, held recently.
The award validates months of work refining business models, building products, and learning from mentors within the BFN community.
Award Winner Built Success Through Resilience
Ladapo holds an MBA and works as a Marketing & Strategy Director. She specializes in brand and product development strategies. Her LinkedIn profile describes her as an entrepreneur focused on building solutions.
The award ceremony highlighted her journey through the Smart Start cohort. Participants spent months learning, refining ideas, and building alongside other founders. The program includes mentorship, workshops, and access to networks.
“This recognition is fuel,” Ladapo shared after winning. She emphasized that entrepreneurship requires resilience, connection, and constant pursuit of better solutions.
Building Community Through Competition
Founders support each other throughout the process. Ladapo thanked judges, mentors, and fellow founders who “challenge and uplift each other every step of the way.”
This community approach addresses the isolation many Black entrepreneurs face. It provides role models, practical advice, and emotional support during difficult periods.
The cohort model ensures founders learn together. They share resources, make connections, and celebrate wins collectively.
Future Plans Take Shape
Ladapo plans to use the recognition and funding to continue building solutions. She focuses on creating impact through her venture while contributing back to the entrepreneurship community.
The award positions her well for future funding rounds. Recognition from established programs like BFN carries weight with investors and partners.
Her success story joins a growing list of BFN alumni making waves across industries. Each win demonstrates the potential when barriers are removed and support systems get built.
