Elon Musk Accuses Jeff Bezos of Copying as AI Rivalry Escalates

Elon Musk has reignited his long-running rivalry with Jeff Bezos after reacting to the announcement of Bezos’s new AI startup, Project Prometheus. Musk’s brief post dismissed the move as imitation, a sign that competition between the two tech founders is entering a fresh phase.

A New Challenger Enters the AI Race

Reports reveal that Jeff Bezos has taken on a hands-on role in Project Prometheus as co-CEO. The company has secured multibillion-dollar backing and is positioning itself to build advanced AI systems for industrial applications. It marks Bezos’s first operational leadership role since leaving Amazon.

The startup has also attracted high-profile researchers from leading AI labs, indicating that it intends to compete at the top tier of model development.

Musk’s Sharp Reaction

When the news surfaced, Musk responded instantly on X. His post,  “Haha, no way. Copy Cat”, was a direct swipe at Bezos and a familiar claim. Musk has a long history of accusing Bezos of following his footsteps, from space exploration to autonomous systems.

The tone of the response suggests that Musk sees Prometheus as a direct competitor to his own company, xAI. It also shows that the public rivalry between the two remains alive and intense.

A Rivalry Rooted in Parallel Ambitions

The tension between Musk and Bezos is not new. For years, the pair have clashed over space, satellites, autonomous robotics, and now the emerging frontier of large-scale AI. Musk often frames Bezos’s ventures as reactive, while Bezos tends to avoid public confrontation.

Project Prometheus adds a new dimension to this competition. Its focus on applying AI to engineering, manufacturing, aerospace, and related sectors overlaps with several areas where Musk has built influence.

What Comes Next

The arrival of Prometheus sets the stage for a new phase of strategic rivalry. Questions now follow:

  • How will Musk sharpen xAI’s roadmap in response?

  • Will Prometheus reveal a product direction that competes directly with existing AI labs?

  • Can Bezos’s return to active leadership shift momentum in the sector?

The dynamic between both founders ensures that the story will continue to unfold in public and at speed. Their competition has shaped entire industries before. With AI now at the centre, the impact may be even larger.
