Instagram’s Newest Update: Reposts, Interactive Map & Friends Tab

by Kingsley Okeke

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Instagram is shifting gears, twisting the dial from passive browsing to active socializing. On August 6, 2025, the platform introduced three major new features: reposts, an interactive map, and a Friends tab in Reels, designed to deepen social connections and enhance content discovery.

1. Reposts: Share the Love (and Content)

What’s new:

  • You can now repost public Reels and feed posts directly to your profile and followers’ feeds with just a tap.
  • A dedicated “Reposts” tab on your profile keeps track of what you’ve shared.
  • Users can add personal notes via a thought bubble before sharing.

2. Instagram Map: Location Meets Social (With a Safeguard)

What’s new:

  • A new opt-in feature displays users’ last active location and geotagged content from friends on an interactive map.
  • Users control visibility, friends, Close Friends, selected users, or no one.
  • Parental control tools alert guardians when teens share their location.

3. Friends Tab in Reels: A Social Lens on Content

What’s new:

  • A dedicated tab in Reels showcasing content your friends liked, commented on, reposted, or created.
  • Includes content shared through features like “Blends”.
  • Users can hide their activity or mute certain followers.

Final Thoughts

Instagram’s latest features are a bold move to rekindle friend-focused interaction, blurring the lines between discovery and social connection. While they offer value for creators and users seeking deeper engagement, concerns around originality, privacy, and interface clutter remain substantial.

Will Instagram retain its unique identity, or will it blend into the ecosystem of feature-rich competitors? Only time will tell.
