Canada’s AI Safety Institute Pledges $1 Million to UK Counterpart

Canada’s AI Safety Institute Pledges

Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (CAISI) has pledged $1 million CAD to support the UK AI Safety Institute. The funds will go toward the UK-led Alignment Research Project, a global effort to make advanced AI systems safer.

What CAISI Does

CAISI is a federal body launched in 2024 to study and manage AI risks. It focuses on threats such as misinformation, cybersecurity, and misuse of synthetic content. The institute runs two research tracks, one led by the government, the other by independent researchers. It also partners with Canada’s national AI hubs: Mila, Vector, and Amii.

About the UK Institute

The UK AI Safety Institute was formed in 2023. It grew out of the Frontier AI Taskforce and is backed by £100 million in funding. The institute leads global safety research and develops tools to test AI models. It co-chairs the International Network of AI Safety Institutes with the US and Canada.

What the Funding Supports

Canada’s $1 million contribution will help fund the Alignment Project’s core areas:

  • Model evaluation
  • Research grants
  • Secure compute access
  • Policy and safety standards

The project also includes support for early-stage safe AI ventures. Canadian AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio sits on its advisory board.

Why It Matters

The pledge cements Canada’s role in shaping safe AI development. It links national research with global efforts to manage emerging risks. It also shows Canada’s commitment to building shared rules and tools for AI oversight.

What’s Next

CAISI and the UK institute will co-lead research on model alignment and reliability. The collaboration is part of a growing international push to ensure AI works safely across borders.
